However, if you mean you just want to upgrade your -stable box so that it is running some recent snapshot of -current, then that should be workable. Just update your /usr/src to the appropriate tag, and check through the entries in /usr/src/UPDATING (although that is probably going to describe many events you don't really care about when jumping from 4.9-stable to a recent current). You do have to be a bit more careful about following ALL of the standard steps for doing an upgrade, and avoid the temptation to try any of of the "shortcuts which usually work".
