Well, both actually.  I have in my .pinerc the following:

    hades$ grep signature .pinerc
    literal-signature=
    signature-file=~/.signature

Pine will then pick the signature from .signature and not from .pinerc.
Other mailers can find it there too, and I can have the same signature,
regardless of the "favorite mailer of the moment".
