Emailing the maintainer and sending in a PR is indeed correct.

One of our guidelines is that we expect maintainers who are committers
to try to handle PRs within a 2-week period.  However, this PR is not
yet 2 weeks old, so I think it's fair to let the assignee have a chance
to work on it.

We have a huge backlog of PRs and nearly 18,000 ports, so not everything
can be done immediately.  Please be patient.
