Look at the source to the rtc driver. Basically, rtc_poll() does a DELAY() for the amount of time vmware wants to sleep. It would be far better to tsleep(). However, we can't do that because we don't are not able to sleep for a short enough period of time. I think Linux is able alter its rtc frequency on the fly, so they can sleep for a short enough period of time...
