" And also note that one of the sites, Interland, was partly owned by Microsoft so of course they would go to NT. (they aren't anymore, but of course as you know it takes a while to start large migration projects) Solaris already has good SMP, much better than Microsoft's. I don't see that this was a factor. At any rate, consider that Apache has 60% of the market, and the remaining 40% is split up among everyone else, including Microsoft. Now I don't know about you, but I've never yet seen a group of people in which 60% of the group completely agreed with something. Just due to the natural course of human nature, as different web server platforms continue to be introduced, we are going to see everyone else taking more and more share away from Apache. Apache is a great webserver but it simply cannot be all things to all people. Neither can Microsoft. In fact, this is unhealthy for the Net as it just promotes the spread of worm programs like Code Red. The most healthy Internet would be one in which there were many competing web server platforms that all had a somewhat equal share of the pie. Consider also something else. Apache also has been ported to Windows. According to Netcraft, Microsoft OS's make up the majority of OS's on the Internet, with Linux second. Since Apache makes up the majority of webservers on the Internet, wouldn't you think that in order for the figures to balance that more like half of the Windows systems out there must not be running the Microsoft webserver, and instead are running Apache? See http://apachetoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=2001-06-30-001-01-NW-LF-MR for a more detailed explanation of what's really going on.
