I have read and understood your comments.

I still contend that it is a dumb and inappropriate error message.

If nothing else it is dumb because it is rather spectacularly uninformative,
and provies not a single clue as to what the offending byte sequece was, let
alone where in the input that sequence was located.

Also, of course, the word "illegal" is inappropriate in this context.
