Make sure  your BIOS is the latest. It might just help. VESA is lightly
used these days, mostly at boot time, and many BIOSes have really
deteriorated. As long as they work with a Windows boot, they figure all is
well. My ThinkPad has a BOIS that functioned, but not very well. It had a
variety if issues, hte most annoying was displaying at 1024x768 (4x3) on
the 1600x900 (16x9) display. The Dell may have a more serious issue. Took
Lenovo almost two years to update the VESA support and by then I was
running with KMS support.

Of course, now that you have the KMS support working, you may not care any
more than I do.
