Assuming you pay careful attention to mergemaster and make sure you keep 
world/kernel in sync, I don't see why not.  I use a development box for 
testing releases, and it's gone back and forth between 4.1.1 <-> 4.5 on 
RELENG_4 and RELENG_4_x with no noticeable issues.
