I tried this a couple of days ago, and I similarly got the missing tiff-3.6.1_1 error as it was no where to be found in the ftp site. I had installed FreeBSD 5.3 and the ports collection from a CD onto a new machine. I got that error afterwards when I tried to build from ports samba3, IIRC. cvsup-ing the ports collection eliminated those errors.
