I had this problem a while back.  Apparently it was a bug in tar that 
caused the problem.  If you upgrade to a later version of 
FreeBSD-CURRENT, I think you will find that the problem is fixed.

If you don't want to go through this effort, I found that hacking the 
Makefile in the openoffice source, so as to fool the make tool, worked 
just fine.
