According to dnstrace, the following oddities were found when resolving the stuff to resolve ftp.freebsd.org: 1 bcm.tmc.edu 128.241.0.84 ALERT: query failed; timed out 1 caer.bcm.tmc.edu 128.241.0.84 ALERT: query failed; timed out 1 cs.arizona.edu 128.10.2.5 NODATA 1 cs.arizona.edu 128.196.11.233 NODATA 1 cs.arizona.edu 128.196.11.234 NODATA 1 cs.arizona.edu 128.196.11.235 NODATA 1 cs.arizona.edu 128.196.128.233 NODATA 1 cs.arizona.edu 128.196.128.234 NODATA 1 cs.arizona.edu 192.12.69.5 NODATA 1 cs.arizona.edu 192.195.240.1 NODATA 1 ftp.freesoftware.com 204.216.27.3 ALERT: lame server; refers to freesoftware.com 1 ftp.freesoftware.com 207.90.181.81 ALERT: lame server; refers to freesoftware.com 1 ftp.freesoftware.com 198.41.0.4 see freesoftware.com 1 ns1.cdrom.com 208.217.74.97 ALERT: query failed; timed out 1 who2.cdrom.com 208.217.74.97 ALERT: query failed; timed out 1 who2.cdrom.com 208.197.4.180 NXDOMAIN 1 who2.cdrom.com 208.197.4.181 NXDOMAIN 1 who2.cdrom.com 209.155.82.18 NXDOMAIN Some of those are only indirectly relevant, the problem is almost certainly due to the various servers at freesoftware/cdrom.com being broken. (As to how the .edu ones apply, I didn't look. dnstrace walks through all records relevant to the lookup, no matter how remote.)
