(using freebsd) Did you install KDE from packages? I experienced the same problem with the KDE packages on the 4.4-R CDs, but found that everything works fine when I rebuilt from the latest KDE port (as of about a week ago). One thing that occurred to me is that the packages might have been built on a system using DES passwords, whereas I (and presumably you as well) am using the default MD5 passwords... Anyway, try rebuilding KDE from the ports and see what happens.
