GENERIC now contains both sc and vt, > so vt must be selected by adding kern.vty=vt to /boot/loader.conf. After seeing additional posts to this thread some seven hours later, I decided to look at the GENERIC kernel config file that came with my 9.3-STABLE upgrade. The GENERIC kernel config file (i386) is dated 10/7/2014 (the date of my upgrade) and the RCS/SCCS $Id$ line in that file looks like this: $FreeBSD: stable/9/sys/i386/conf/GENERIC 271233 2014-09-07 18:42:45Z markj $ But, but, this GENERIC kernel config file does _NOT_ contain the string "vt" ANYWHERE!!! So how can the above statement: "GENERIC now contains both sc and vt" possibly be true? I am still confused, but I would like to be able to exit my Xorg sessions cleanly (whether the "right" way using shell built-in "exec" or the "wrong" way by killing the window manager). :-) Oh, and BTW, I obtained the O/S source files using this command: # svn co svn://svn.freebsd.org/base/stable/9 src on 10/7/2014. Thanks again.
