Subject: TeX runs slowly after upgrading to 5.3-stable

I've just moved my computer from FreeBSD 5.2.1 to 5.3-STABLE.

I made a fresh installation, not an upgrading. I now have the following
problem: When I run Tex or LaTeX or any application related to TeX
it takes a long time to start, and then keeps doing something and can be
seen monitoring it with top. However if I start the same application
as root everything goes fine, no delay no CPU usage.

The computer is an HP xw6000 with two CPU: Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.06GHz
and real memory = 1073676288 (1023 MB)

Thank for any hint.
