As I understood your objections, you were worried about the negative =
performance impact of loosing 'u', and the extra verbosity of loosing =
'c'.

The first patch attempts to clean up ar flags, so makefiles respect the =
global ARFLAGS if one is defined, without changing the default ARFLAGS =
in share/mk/sys.mk. The second patch changes the default from 'rl' to =
'cru'.

If this does not address your concerns, could you elaborate a bit more?
