The package only contains a binary 'latex' which is a link to virtex
(this a bug in the port :-)), but not the latex format file
(/usr/local/lib/texmf/ini/latex.fmt) nor the .sty/.cls files in
/usr/local/lib/texmf/tex.
Can you send a ls -Rl of /usr/local/lib/texmf ?
