I have similar problems that may be resolved using the "Ghostscript"
but I don't find a reference to where it is in my FBSD book or on my
2.2.6 CD. Could someone provide chapter and verse on where to find
the related files please?
Also, is there a web site that I could look at to find out more about
Ghostscript?

No. If you install Ghostscript (packages and ports collection) you can use
it as a driver to convert PostScript into a lot of printer specific
formats. For example, my printer at home is an old Epson-compatible
matrix printer (9 pins) which does well with Ghostscript.
Please look into the section about printing in the handbook to get details
about filter scripts using Ghostscript.
