The C30 > driver from HP quite regularly loses contact with the camera also. Sometimes I have to switch the camera off/on to make it communicate . But it just downloaded 22 pictures in one go without giving problems. In the course of my experiments I rebuilt a kernel to disable the 16550A fifo on my serial port.
