I dug around in the hackers list for information on the AMD PCNet/PCI chip driver, and found this: > Date: Wed, 9 Sep 1998 16:49:33 +0700 (NSS) > From: Max Khon > Subject: AMD PCnet/PCI support is broken in both -current and -stable > > hi, there! > > we've got IBM Ethernet Adapters based on AMD PCnet/PCI. > due to last changes in if_lnc.c they are not attached during boot. > yes, they are probed successfully but do not get attached because > driver thinks they are Hitachi Am79C970 (they have _the_same_ chip_id) > and avoids attaching them. There is a patch for this that has been committed, so -current and -stable should have the fix. Per Jordan, I downloaded 2.2.7-19980911-SNAP, and the Ethernet now WORKS fine - however, I still get THOUSANDS of the annoying "Heartbeat error -- SQE failed" messages. Perhaps I should just hack the printf() out of the driver - but it would be nice if there was a software switch to turn off the SQE "heartbeat" test... I believe the convention in most shops is to turn this off anyway. Thanks all!
