The following works quite good for me:

1. install libSDL from the ports
	> cd /usr/ports/devel/sdl12 && make install
2. install the videolan client

	# this will ask you for a password, just hit enter

        > sh configure --prefix=3D/usr/local --with-sdl=3D/usr/local   =20
	> gmake
	> gmake install
3. run /usr/local/bin/vlc
