This is a problem (IMHO) with the port.

/usr/local/bin/kcheckpass

needs to be SUID root, and the port doesn't do this by default for "security"
reasons. The utter uselessness of the default behavior convinces me that
this is perfectly silly behavior on the part of the part, but when this topic
has come up before the porter has not seemed very amenable to changing this.

So after you install KDE you pretty much have got to

chmod +s /usr/local/bin/kcheckpass

before you can actually *KDE*.

If you upgrade in the future, a CTL-ALT-F2 will get you to a console window
whence you can do this next time you get stuck and then ALT-F9 will let you
type in a usable password again.

It just wants your regular user password--nothing fancy.
