II just got some, and the stock 2.2.6 kernel seems to work fine with it. 970921 is a long time ago; did you try the driver that's in -stable now? There have been a number of commits since then, and one of them pulled in the -current driver. Here's dmesg output from a PII with a BA booting the 2.2.6 release kernel.
