There have been two major branches of Unixes: AT&T and BSD. FreeBSD comes from 4.4BSD. So many documents of BSD is applicable to FreeBSD. Linux is written from scratch. So if you look at the Linux kernel, some data structures are different from traditional Unix. Besides, FreeBSD is easy to install, to add a system call. Please search the Mailing list archive.
