Have you tried VMware? I use it all the time on my XP box, for test purposes. :) I installed a FreeBSD 4.7R OS on a VMware box, inside XP, that I can communicate with in all the normal ways, like FTP. VMware will easily allow you to add a physical drive to the configuration.
