I asked this question a little while ago and just wanted to report the
answer I'd found.  An SA recommended that I upgrade the BIOS on my ASUS
P2L97 motherboard.  I did it using a rather simple procedure, and now the
hard drive works just as expected.  Getting all those OSes to live together
in harmony is another issue, but all the hardware matters are solved.
