I make a FreeBSD-based motorized co-ordinate measuring machine which
uses servo motors to control the measuring quill.

Given the low prices, I would simply get a motor controller card of some
type (maybe a microstepper) and write a driver to that.  I'd rather
concentrate on the application than count pulses.
