That actually was my plan, alas the update has taken so long that I
forgot my original plan. :(

How about the following?

 PORTNAME=3D      gcc
-PORTVERSION=3D   5.4.0
-PORTREVISION=3D  3
+PORTVERSION=3D   ${GCC_DEFAULT}
 CATEGORIES=3D    lang java
