Neither works with proxies that need authentication. Running a local proxy that handles the authentication (e.g. squid) would work around that. There are probably also some tunnelling utilities that will connect a localhost port through an HTTP CONNECT. If you can get that to work it should give better performance since it will allow full pipelining.
