From: fbaumann@worldnet.fr (Frédéric Baumann) Date: 29 Jul 1998 00:07:24 +0000 Message-ID: Lines: 89 X-Mailer: Gnus v5.5/XEmacs 20.3 - "Vatican City" Sender: owner-aic7xxx@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org PLEASE HELP ME !!!!! NEARLY TWO WEEKS SPENT FOR THIS PROBLEM WITHOUT ANY RESULTS :--(((( I've already posted several messages in this mailing list, about the problems I have in booting the kernel with the aic7xxx support. While kernels 2.0.32, 2.0.35 with or without the pre5.1.0 patch hang during the boot, I've just tried to compile the 2.0.29 kernel (with aic7xxx support), and ****IT WORKS**** Hmmm, it ****** ALMOST ******* works :( All looks fine in text mode (and btw, also in Win NT 4.0), but when I start XFree86 with at least one graphical client (xterm, even without any window-manager), then the system hangs (and the xterm window partially drawn remains stuck on the screen). I use my adaptec 2940-AU with only one SCSI device connected to it : a Nikon CoolScan II scanner. I can scan pictures with the "scanimage" command from the SANE software, but only in text mode. I've tried several cables for the connection, it doesn't change anything. I've tried to put my 2 PCI boards (2940-AU and video board STB Velocity 3D) in different PCI slots, but it doesn't change anything. What is curious is that before the 2940-AU, I've tried a Tekram DC-390U SCSI controller. With it, the card also worked perfectly in text mode (and Win NT 4.0), but when XFree was running, the "scanimage" command caused a system hanging. So with the two SCSI boards, I have similar problems. As Doug suggested to me, it's probably a PCI problem related to address conflicts. However, my /proc/pci says that the video board is mapped in 0x80000000 and that the 2940 is mapped in 0x81000000. The output of X seems to say that the video is at 0x80000000 More accurately: *** extract of the output of startx *** (--) S3V: PCI: ViRGE/VX rev 2, Linear FB @ 0x80000000 ...
