It *is* supposed to unmount things cleanly, and it does. But your disk
is lying about write operations having completed when in fact they're
sitting in the disk's cache. Then the APM BIOS powers the machine off
before the disk has had time to flush its cache.

Because 'halt -p' didn't use to work at all?
