You feel as though the YA-shaming (for lack of a better word) has to do wi=
th the gender makeup of that genre then?

Well with YA specifically=2C that's even more granular: the authors of the=
se huge blockbuster series are women=2C they're writing about complicated=
and fascinating and flawed female characters who are allowed to have feel=
ings=2C and they're being read by teenage girls (the group of people whose=
tastes we most love to mock). So it's a kind of trifecta. And I don't thi=
nk it's purposeful=2C I don't think most cultural critics are sitting down=
and thinking=2C ugh=2C I'm so tired of all these GIRLS and their FEELINGS=
on the best-seller lists. But at the bottom of YA "shaming=2C" that's bas=
ically what it is.

"Yes=2C Volodya=2C did read it. Of course. This novel was finished and los=

Every week=2C we pick one lost classic from reader recommendations=E2=80=

When this novel was published in Beirut in 1984=2C it was immediately reco=
gnized for its power. Robert Wechsler=2C who recommended the book to us=2C=
said that its greatness is "based largely on what isn't there=2C such as=

As always=E2=80=94spread the good words (below).
