I hate to ``pass the buck'', but it sounds suspiciously like there may be a problem with the remote ppp (maybe a routing thing?). As you point out, the only thing that ppp & pppd share is the sio driver, and I'd be surprised if that came up with the ability to send stuff but not receive...
