I am no expert either, but it seems that pam_xdg was introduced for Wayland.
pam_xdg seems to create a directory /var/run/xdg/${USER}. However, lightdm
references /var/run/user/${uid}, so gnome-keyring authentication does not s=
eem
to work.

As you mentioned, it would be better to write in lightdm's pkg-message that
pam_xdg should be disabled.
