Expr could do the trick:
before=`expr "${ifconfig_args}" : '.*[Dd][Hh][Cc][Pp]\(.*\)'`
behind=`expr "${ifconfig_args}" : '\(.*\)[Dd][Hh][Cc][Pp].*'`
other_ifconfig_args="${before}${behind}"
And expr is in /bin.
