Aside from the tons of projects I have I am also looking into making MTA
a more modular choice for advanced and guru users within sysinstall. It
will surely mean that sendmail gets kicked to ports.

But if you feel like helping have a go at the sysinstall sources.

/usr/src/release/sysinstall
