I installed net-snmp and mrtg yesterday, and it works just fine. When you
compile net-snmp it asks you for some basic information on how to configure it.
For more fine grained configuration you have to read a lot (at least 4) man pages. 
My only consern is security, but all snmp v1 and v2 agents are insecure, and
sinse I'm using this behind a firewall it's not a big problem.
