I think the best tip here is: backups are your friend. Something seems
to happen to people's understanding of this when they set up machines in
their homes. People who are paranoid to a fault about backups at the
office let their home systems run for years without backing them up.
When the inevitable happens, as you found out, life without a tape drive
is hell.

Now, I understand that finding a way to back up your 200 Gb home MP3
collection can be painful, but if you have systems and data that are
important to you, get that data backed up *somewhere*.
