If I'm reading the back traces correctly it seems the causes are from two different places. Of course the odds of me misreading it is alot higher than getting it right! Here's the back traces from the last four crashes - the system is FreeBSD-2.2.6 from the most recent CD with no patches. I have the vm patch but have yet to apply it - I'm planning on doing that next but wanted to get this posted from a clean system: FIRST -------------------- IdlePTD 268000 current pcb at 2479c0 panic: ffs_valloc: dup alloc #0 boot (howto=256) at ../../kern/kern_shutdown.c:266 #1 0xf0115da2 in panic (fmt=0xf01b12a3 "ffs_valloc: dup alloc") at ../../kern/kern_shutdown.c:390 #2 0xf01b144b in ffs_valloc (ap=0xefbffdd0) at ../../ufs/ffs/ffs_alloc.c:544 #3 0xf01bd2de in ufs_makeinode (mode=33204, dvp=0xf2f92f80, vpp=0xefbfff04, cnp=0xefbfff18) at vnode_if.h:927 #4 0xf01bada5 in ufs_create (ap=0xefbffe28) at ../../ufs/ufs/ufs_vnops.c:113 #5 0xf0138aac in vn_open (ndp=0xefbffef4, fmode=1538, cmode=436) at vnode_if.h:59 #6 0xf0136332 in open (p=0xf2969600, uap=0xefbfff94, retval=0xefbfff84) at ../../kern/vfs_syscalls.c:701 #7 0xf01dcf3f in syscall (frame={tf_es = 39, tf_ds = 39, tf_edi = 12947462, tf_esi = -272640316, tf_ebp = -272642456, tf_isp = -272629788, tf_ebx = 12806144, tf_edx = 12948359, tf_ecx = 732764, tf_eax = 5, tf_trapno = 12, tf_err = 7, tf_eip = 263265553, tf_cs = 31, tf_eflags = 663, tf_esp = -272642844, tf_ss = 39}) at ../../i386/i386/trap.c:918 #8 0xfb11d11 in ??
