Well, when you install a ELF kernel for the first time, make install will
bitch and remind you of that fact.

Not to mention, file *will* tell you if you have an ELF kernel or not.

regret:~> file /kernel
/kernel: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (FreeBSD), dynamically linked, not stripped

So, if it's a.out, you can expect that "unknown" that you received.

Default 3.0-RELEASE installs have an a.out kernel, as mentioned before.
