Dear Sir or Madam, I am unable to solve some problems that constantly occur in my system, so I ask You to give me Your competent advice to help me out. I have Free BSD 2.2.2. 1. My first headache is my mail system. We have a _very_ low bandwidth connection, and quite often, when users subscribe to some highly populated mailing lists or order something rather large via ftp-mail, the memory of the server becomes stuffed with lots of idle sendmail processes. In such situations the output of "ps -ax" command looks like: ------ some lines deleted ------ 113 ?? Ss 0:00.28 sendmail: rejecting connections on port 25: 15 childr 1255 ?? Should I install more memory (now I have only 32M physical RAM)? Or, should I try to tune up sendmail config somehow? 2. The second problem (well, it does not hurt very much, but I'd rather I didn't have it) is the ppp users. According to the log file there are some conflicts between pppd and routed when a ppp user connects. Is it necessary to turn off "proxy arp" setting in pppd config file? Or should I turn off routed completely? The excerpt of the log file is given below. ------ some lines deleted ------ May 14 19:32:03 osvita pppd[16736]: pppd 2.2.0 started by sergey, uid 1011 May 14 19:32:03 osvita pppd[16736]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cuaa0 May 14 19:32:09 osvita pppd[16736]: local IP address 194.183.166.97 May 14 19:32:09 osvita pppd[16736]: remote IP address 194.183.166.110 May 14 19:32:09 osvita routed[58]: IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP ALLHOSTS: Address already in use May 14 19:32:09 osvita routed[58]: IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP ALLHOSTS: Address already in use May 14 19:32:09 osvita routed[58]: setsockopt(IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP RIP): Address already in use May 14 19:32:09 osvita routed[58]: setsockopt(IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP RIP): Address already in use May 14 19:32:09 osvita routed[58]: punt RTM_ADD without gateway May 14 19:32:09 osvita routed[58]: punt RTM_ADD without gateway May 14 19:32:49 osvita pppd[16736]: Modem hangup May 14 19:32:49 osvita routed[58]: interface ppp0 to 194.183.166.97 turned off May 14 19:32:49 osvita routed[58]: interface ppp0 to 194.183.166.97 turned off May 14 19:33:20 osvita routed[58]: punt RTM_LOSING without gateway May 14 19:33:20 osvita routed[58]: punt RTM_LOSING without gateway May 14 19:37:35 osvita routed[58]: punt RTM_LOSING without gateway May 14 19:37:35 osvita routed[58]: punt RTM_LOSING without gateway May 14 20:04:47 osvita routed[58]: punt RTM_LOSING without gateway May 14 20:04:47 osvita routed[58]: punt RTM_LOSING without gateway May 14 20:33:20 osvita routed[58]: punt RTM_LOSING without gateway ------ some lines deleted ------ 3. How to log ftp logins and ftp transers? While working with Linux, I used "xferlog"-file for these purposes. But now, with Free BSD I don't seem to find anything like "xferlog"-file. 4. And finally, I just wanted to ask how can I configure syslogd to log password change events. Is there a simple way to do it in Free BSD? Thanks a lot for Your assistance. Please take my apologies for being so much wordy. I didn't mean to, but I thought I'd better give as much information as possible to describe my situation. Thank You in advance.
