Yeah...  and in hier it says man pages go in /usr/share/man

     /usr/    contains the majority of user utilities and applications
              share/    architecture-independent files
                        man/       manual pages

Note that the man page hier(archy) is not detailed... :-_)
But LO!  Little elves have been busy...

              local/    local executables, libraries, etc.
                        Also used as the default destination for the FreeBSD
                        ports framework.  Within local/, the general layout
                        sketched out by hier(7) for /usr should be used.  Ex-
                        ceptions are the man directory is directly under lo-
                        cal/ rather than under local/share/.  Ports documenta-
                        tion is in share/doc/<port>/

Perhaps the following would help improve the readability:

Exceptions are the /usr/local/man directory which is directly under
local/ rather than under local/share/.  Ports documentation is in local/share/doc/<port>/.
