You are probably right. I am sorry for this slightly premature posting and for firing up this discussion. I dived a bit deeper into the squid documentation (i.e. I read the FAQ) now and noticed this option myself. I had the wrong precaution that squid would use only one cache directory - so vinum came to my mind. But it is nonetheless interesting to hear so many opinions considering vinum.
