I encountered this as well. Fired up xterm from a command line (within Emacs, which did work still) and it couldn't load some library, possibly libXft.so.1 ? IIRC libXft.so.2 did exist but that's not what xterm was looking for. I also had "rxvt" installed (from ports) and that worked fine so I used that to su and rebuild X11, first the server, then the clients, from ports.
