Sorry. It is true that /dev/dsp* nodes are successfully created.

Issue I faced is a bit different:
1) 2 playback channels instead of 4 - successfully mitigated with Florian's
suggestion - thanks.
2) Mixer is not populated with any recording controls, yet inspecting
virtual_oss input level using virtual_oss_ctl (hw.snd.vpc_0db is set to 100=
 so
there is no gain) it appears to inherit pcm driver's [SOUND_MIXER_MIC] =3D =
25
default from /usr/src/sys/dev/sound/pcm/mixer.c:84 .
