personally I want some run-levels as well.
certainly I want to have  the following modes of operation:

1/ single user
2/ normal
3/ functional test (automatic diagnostics etc)

an inittab file would allow me to not do the edit (for mode 3)
that I'm about to spend the rest of the day doing.
