I and a number of others have laptops on which FreeBSD-current locks up shortly after the end of the kernel device listing. I have in fact gotten past the filesystem clean checks, but most of the time it dies (locks up solid) before those messages show up. The laptops, which are various models, do not lock up on 2.1.6, 2.1.5, or -current from about 6 months ago. I would appreciate any pointers on how I might go about trying to track down this problem. I've down the simple things like disabling all the unused device drivers. here is my dmesg log from a 2.1.6.1 boot: FreeBSD 2.1.6.1-RELEASE #2: Wed Jan 1 01:04:39 PST 1997 brian@admin.mediacity.com:/usx/src/sys-stable-UP/compile/TOP CPU: 198-MHz Pentium 735\\90 or 815\\100 (Pentium-class CPU) Origin = "GenuineIntel" Id = 0x52c Stepping=12 Features=0x1bf<FPU,VME,DE,PSE,TSC,MSR,MCE,CX8> real memory = 33554432 (32768K bytes) avail memory = 30625792 (29908K bytes) Probing for devices on PCI bus 0: chip0 <generic PCI bridge (vendor=%04x device=%04x subclass=%1.2d)> rev 20 on pc i0:0 chip1 <generic PCI bridge (vendor=%04x device=%04x subclass=%1.2d)> rev 2 on pci 0:1 vga0 <VGA-compatible display device> rev 198 on pci0:6 chip2 <generic PCI bridge (vendor=%04x device=%04x subclass=%1.2d)> rev 4 int a irq ?? on pci0:7:0 chip3 <generic PCI bridge (vendor=%04x device=%04x subclass=%1.2d)> rev 4 int b irq ?? on pci0:7:1 pci0:20: OPTI, device=0xc621, class=storage (ide) [no driver assigned] Probing for devices on the ISA bus: sc0 at 0x60-0x6f irq 1 on motherboard sc0: VGA color <16 virtual consoles, flags=0x0> ed0 not found at 0x280 ed1 at 0x300-0x31f irq 10 on isa sio0 at 0x3f8-0x3ff irq 4 on isa sio0: type 16550A sio1 at 0x2f8-0x2ff irq 3 on isa sio1: type 16550A sio2 at 0x3e8-0x3ef irq 11 on isa sio2: type 16550A sio3: disabled, not probed. lpt0 at 0x378-0x37f irq 7 on isa lpt0: Interrupt-driven port lp0: TCP/IP capable interface mse0 not found at 0x23c psm0 at 0x60-0x63 irq 12 on motherboard fdc0 at 0x3f0-0x3f7 irq 6 drq 2 on isa fdc0: NEC 72065B fd0: 1.44MB 3.5in wdc0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7 irq 14 on isa wdc0: unit 0 (wd0): <TOSHIBA MK1002MAV> wd0: 1033MB (2116800 sectors), 2100 cyls, 16 heads, 63 S/T, 512 B/S aha0 not found at 0x330 npx0 on motherboard npx0: INT 16 interface sb0 at 0x220 irq 5 drq 1 on isa -- Brian Litzinger brian@mpress.com
