(1) Check the process table and see if there are any processes using the
tape drive.

    ps auxwwww | egrep "tar|dump|mt"

(2) Sometimes tape drives can be truculent; rebooting with a power-cycle
included often eliminates those "impossible" tape drive problems,
especially if you're dealing with a device that has been powered on and in
service for a long time.
