Well, the problem you are encountering was caused in other cases by a bad patch that RedHat applied to their PHP packages. We know that PHP 4.1.2 itself is not the problem since others (including myself) are running it without problems. So I wonder if the FreeBSD folks may have patched the PHP source code in the ports collection in a way that breaks PHP in the same way Redhat's patch did.
