X61s is rather different from T43 so that might explain why. I have 
tried various variations of modules but there is no difference.

RELENG-9 boots fine
9-BETA1 not
10-CURRENT not

I'll stay at RELENG-9 for the time being and see if anything comes up 
that sheds light on this.
