I don't see what's convoluted about it. In fact, I don't see how much
simpler it could get (except for accepting only one name for each
version of the standard) and still be consistent, because gcc doesn't
have short names for all versions of the C standard, and the -std
option doesn't work for K&R, so you can't just do -std=${CSTD}.
